Aston Villa legend Peter Withe 'seriously ill' in hospital

Aston Villa legend Peter Withe is 'seriously ill' in hospital, the club has announced.

The 73-year-old, who played for Villa between 1980 and 1985, is understood to have been admitted to hospital last week.

A club statement read: "Aston Villa are sad to announce that club legend Peter Withe is currently seriously ill in hospital.

"The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Peter and his family at this difficult time.

"Peter's family have asked for privacy at this time and the club kindly requests that this is respected."

Withe, who won 11 caps for England, scored 91 goals in 192 appearances for Villa.

He played a key role in the club's 1982 European Cup triumph, scoring the winning goal in the final against Bayern Munich.

Withe also helped Villa win the First Division title in 1981 and the League Cup in 1982.

After leaving Villa, Withe went on to play for Newcastle, Everton and Notts County.

He also managed Villa for a brief spell in 1994.

Villa fans have taken to social media to express their concern for Withe and send messages of support to his family.
